Watch: Sweet Baboo – If I Died… [Best Fit Premiere]
“Daniel Johnston has written hundreds of great tunes”, croons Cardiff-based Sweet Baboo on ‘If I Died’ before conceding to his potential lover being serenaded from the grave: “And I got six, so I guess there’s some catching up to do”.
And while Daniel Johnston may be a sufficient comparison to make of the North Walian born singer, both unlikely sources of irresistible pop melodies, it’s perhaps The Magnetic Fields’ Stephin Merritt to whom namesake Stephen Black most pays homage to. Each seem to perfectly condense love’s universal traits, thoughts and feelings without falling foul of making them seem derivative or repetitive.
