Watch: Sarah Neufeld – “Breathing Black Ground (Orchestral Version)” [Premiere]
Last Summer Sarah Neufeld released her debut solo record Hero Brother, a sparse and beautiful LP recorded with Nils Frahm. Together they sought out a variety of different recording locations, from orchestral recording halls to abandoned geodesic domes, the natural acoustics of each place play a significant role in each track.
This week sees Constellation releasing an expanded Bonus Edition of Hero Brother which includes a new 3 song Black Ground EP. To mark the event Neufeld has released this video for the orchestral reworking of brooding album track “Breathing Black Ground”, arranged by Owen Pallett and recorded with the FILMharmonic Orchestra Prague. Pallett’s sensitive arrangements and deep drones heighten the emotional impact of the piece, while maintaining the sense of space and quiet of the original. The video was produced and conceptualised by Montreal artist Brad Todd, who was a member of the band Sofa, the first band to release a record on the Constellation label.
You can stream the Black Ground EP below, and purchase the tracks exclusively via iTunes and Boomkat as part of the Bonus Edition.
