One of the freshest sounds to be repping Brooklyn in 2013, the hip hop crew Phony Ppl, combine golden-era nostalgia with super smooth basslines and funky R&B grooves; think The Roots and D’Angelo foundations but with the playful energy of a far less starved for attention Odd Future, to paint their own colorful and inviting picture of hip hop.
Polished just enough for a mainstream audience, but with such soulful (and solid) lyrical prowess, no matter how entrenched you are in your own underground scene, you can’t help but keep bobbing your head.
‘Statues’ is off Phony Ppl’s excellent nothinG special. EP out now.
