Ahead of our partnership with Iceland Airwaves, we’re proud to present this video premiere from one of the established jewels in the Icelandic music crown – Múm.
We’ve been swooning over the dreamy, eccentric pop of this year’s Smilewound since its release, and ‘Candlestick’ typifies the condensed, upbeat feel that characterised the band’s sixth album. Throbbing with a taut pulse, its bright edge shines with clarity to mark the sharp, infectious melodies. Who better to introduce the stylish, sharp-lined aesthetic of the track’s video than the band themselves:
”The original idea behind Candlestick video is based around a mask made of embroided crochet that Silla (singer Sigurlaug Gísladóttir) wore. Eerily close to her own face, the mask becomes anamorphic and skewed when it becomes the face of the big hulky character of the video. The imagery is based on the painted lines that are such a distinctive quality in the street pattern of downtown Reykjavik. This playful distortion of the basic perception of the Reykjavik street and the puerile act of ringing a doorbell and running away, lie at the heart of the video.”
Smilewound was released this year by Morr Music. The band are set to play a series of dates in November in support of the record, which you can view below:
