Watch: Laura Welsh – “Betrayal” [Premiere]
The leagues of highly assured, powerfully seductive female solo artists continues to baffle since the likes of Ella Eyre, FKA Twigs and BANKS caused a justified online stir last year. Transcending this saturated world remains a serious challenge but Laura Welsh appears to be in an increasingly promising position to do so.
Having worked alongside hugely sought-after producers Robin Hannibal and Dev Hynes, the London-based soul-pop hopeful has unveiled her most radio-ready track to date.
“Betrayal” nods to the big guns of her genre: a heartfelt Adele-esque opening swells into a tribal, stormy chorus that recalls early Florence + The Machine. The production remains entirely relevant though, as electronic palpitations and a thundering bass shudders throughout, with Welsh’s stamp undeniable thanks to typical eerie backing vocals.
Premiering below, the collection of lo-fi shots accompanying this new cut bolster the late-night, ghostly seduction; it is another piece of proof that Laura Welsh has a break-though year ahead.
