Watch Matt Corby perform 'Made of Stone' for us on a 100 year old piano
Matt Corby’s talent as a songwriter, singer and musician is more than assured. After leaving Australia in his late teens, he hooked up with Communion for a handful of EPs – a wise move, allowing him the space to hone his live performance via a torrent of small shows, secret garden concerts and wise collaborations (among them, Best Fit favourites The Middle East).
We’ve witnessed Matt playing first on four-person bill and bring an entire room to tears and applause through his intensity and presence. While he’s been compared in many ways to (sigh) Jeff Buckley, we’re seeing much more Chris Cornell and Nick Drake in Matt’s delivery – perhaps even signs of the gruffness that characterised Tim Buckley rather than his son. Matt’s ability to transcend the template laid down (and followed) by 8 out of 10 singer-songwriters this decade guarantees special things will happen. 2012 find the blue eyed 21 year old signed to Atlantic, nestling alongside Lykke Li, Death Cab for Cutie and Plan B as he works on his debut record.
For Matt’s Best Fit Session, we travelled west to the 120 year old Gore Hotel, scene of an infamous photo shoot (and, one imagines, subsequent debauchery) with The Rolling Stones for their Beggars Banquet record. Setting up behind a creaky century-year old piano, Matt gave us a performance to remember. It’s heart-on-the-sleeve stuff and we love it.
