Yuneki muses through her sweet and sticky debut, "Like Honey"
Rather appropriately considering its namesake, "Like Honey" is a track that buzzes with the aura of hot sunny days, full of syrupy harmonies and sweet mellow vocals.
At only 17 years old, "Like Honey" is the debut single of London-based singer-songwriter Yuneki - a young artist brimming with promise. Evocative synths and delicate percussive elements draw together with broad luscious harmonies to create a soothing alt-pop blank canvas to support Yuneki’s distinctive vocals.
There is a classic quality to the track that roots it in the timeless world of the rock ballad, whilst glistening sonic effects lend themselves more to the era of TikTok and oversharing. Whilst Yuneki’s voice exhibits an eclectic catalogue of cross-genre influences from Lauryn Hill to Gaga, in terms of material, "Like Honey" provides a dutiful nod to the most dependable genre of inspiration; the heart.
Indeed, discussing her motivation behind the track, Yuneki explains, “Like Honey is about the idea of the right person, wrong time. Me and a boy who I’d recently got back in contact with when we wrote it would somehow always go back to each other and it would never work out. I’d always be left thinking about him, hoping I’d see him again or bump into him and romanticising the time we did have together. The last time this happened it felt like I wasn’t ready and I needed to learn to love myself first.”
It is a play on age-old problems of youth but with a uniquely Gen-Z flair with brief reflective interludes musing on the troubles of mental health. For example, lines such as “Last year was fuckin’ rough / But you know that”, break through the soothing sonic texture to give the track an extra layer of depth.
"Like Honey" is a confident and honest debut from an exciting young artist who surely has plenty more to say.
