“EASTER” is an evocative prayer from Yodashe
London-based singer and producer Yodashe shares “EASTER”, the third single from her upcoming debut album which weaves existential concepts with moving melodies
Yodashe is a London-based independent artist and producer with a background in architecture, who made her debut in NYC as an alum of Redbull Music Academy. Since then she has appeared in various electronic music festivals (Sonar, Todays Art, Reworks) and smaller club-nights while developing her experimental live set.
‘EASTER’ is taken from her self-produced debut album, Yodashe's thesis project, a full-length built around the sound of the vintage synthesizer EDP Wasp, with supervision by Grammy-nominated record producer Mikko Gordon. Written on Easter Day during the first Covid lockdown in London, "EASTER" is an obscure reflection on the early days of the pandemic; a sonic polaroid capturing the depression and confusion of that time period.
Like an abstract painting in the beginning, "EASTER" challenges you to understand its structure, but after an unexpected drop, the sonic layers fall more and more into place and fill the space with sparkling brightness. Crafting an intense electronic music gem, Yodashe then fills its swepping sound with meaning through beautiful words, as she sings: “So hard to get up in the morning / where we did go wrong? Careful not to show how we're falling / Always in control / Tryna get the best out of all this”.
Bursting with warm pop and soul tones, the vocals blend into the production in ethereal, ambient layers leaving a melancholic trail in their wake. Building her signature style, Yodashe's previous singles also meld genres and influences from classical and choral to indie-rock and avant-garde electronics. All of this is done with the utmost charm, sophistication. and an elegant mastery of musical composition.
Speaking of the track's making, Yodashe explains “I remember I used to wake up in the morning, make my coffee, open the sash window, and stay put, facing at the sun with my eyes closed, until i would feel the sun burn on my eyelids and my head completely empty and clear. I would then try to formulate specific images in my mind, with great level of detail, of where I wanted to be in the future, scenarios which made me really, really happy and excited.”
