YHWH Nailgun deliver seething experimental cut “Penetrator”

14 November 2024, 17:00 | Written by Camryn Teder

Like underground outfits from The Garden to Clown Core, this New York-based experimental group fuses searing synthesizers, sickening drum lines, and propulsive guitars in their latest punk-inspired release, making for a truly primal and evocative collection of grindcore sounds.

Playing alongside alternative genre-benders like Nourished By Time, Geese, and Black Midi, as well as dream pop forces like Chanel Beads, the burgeoning experimental four-piece YHWH Nailgun is in good company among similarly visceral acts. Made up of drummer Sam Pickard, synth player Jack Tobias, guitarist Saguiv Rosenstock, and singer Zack Borzone, the group just recently signed to the innovative experimental label AD93. With a truly aggressive and angular sound, they are quickly climbing the ranks of the underground in more ways than one, and soaring to a spot on the main stage.

With each new release from YHWH Nailgun, from the crackling “Too Bright to See” to the rhythmic “Tear Pusher”, the band is tightening up their niche pattern of sound, further perfecting the art of making a ricocheting bonanza of synthetic sound fit into tight musical structures and familiar arrangements. That intention is firmly realized in the group’s latest track “Penetrator”.

With a restless drive of jungle drums serving as a backdrop for the searing vocals, Borzone shouts into a discordant abyss in the track, his cadence morphing alongside the relentless soundscape. The curated collage of sharp maximalism is addicting in its sporadic flashing of noises that jolts the senses awake, igniting a visceral connection between the brain and the body. Simply put, “Penetrator” makes one feel truly alive.

Currently finishing up a stint at Pitchfork London, and a short European tour, YHWH Nailgun is getting busy. Inevitably that pace will only quicken given the innate forcefulness of their sound. So, if you can’t catch them live this time, experience the full vigour of their new offring, and stay tuned for the chaos to come.
