Work Wife's latest offering "Something's Up" swells with an understated, timeless quality
The sun is glaring down on a dusty road, the smell of hot rubber tyres and faintly sweaty bodies emanates from the car and with windows rolled all the way down, you can vividly imagine Work Wife's "Something’s Up" blaring through the tinny speakers.
Started by Brooklyn-based musician Meredith Lampe (also of Colatura), Work Wife is a dream pop project with a punch, blending influences of synth pop and surf rock with a more traditional Americana quality. Latest track "Something's Up" pulls directly from this scene built from American dreams; a song that yearns for the dry heat of summer evenings and the faint burn of whisky in the back of your throat.
Anthemic, rounded harmonies are played off against the harsher, more raw quality of electric guitars, blending more contemporary sounds with some of the most traditional. Drawing on themes of nostalgia and memory, they create a joyous, laidback offering.
Describing the influences behind the track, the band state: “'Something’s Up' is about your best friend’s mom and how she always knows the right thing to say. It’s about feeling more honest with her than you might feel with your own family, with whom the repercussions of confessing bad decisions are greater. I have a lot of fond memories of running around at my childhood best friend Jessica’s house and getting into trouble, and this song is a little ode to that time.”
Full of indulgent, dream like harmonies and underpinned by a pulse-perfect drum line, it is an effortlessly evocative track that conjures up scenes from old movies and carefree times gone by. Lampe’s vocals have a trance-like quality, merging and intermingling almost conversationally with luxurious guitar textures layered underneath whilst a sharp, rhythmic drum line ties the track together. Nostalgic-tinged lenses are unmistakeable throughout as the whole track drapes itself in a dream like quality, both sonically and lyrically.
For anyone on the lookout for an addition to their summer driving playlist or simply in need of some musical sunlight at this dreary time of year, be sure to have a listen to this understated, timeless track.
