"Shopping" is a rallying cry from Welly
Brighton-based band share their debut single, alongside a video that sees the five-piece having a blast in a local shopping centre.
Welly and his band of PE-kitted disciples, outlets a funny yet sarcastic pop which brilliantly stands on a suburban narration. Their live shows include a live TV feed, horoscopes, and lyric writing, while using an odd bib and PE whistle on a lanyard. A witty jam of Fatboy Slim, The Human League, and Rizzle Kicks, Welly are more than just five fools with guitars.
"Shopping" “is about the ‘‘grass is greener’ mentality - not just in products and tat, but in your surroundings,” they share. ‘‘There’s such beauty to that Yuppie era, the feeling it would never end: now there’s these cathedrals to excess up and down the country, shopping centres and high streets left to rot. I find them so romantic.”
‘‘So people complain about their local areas being crap, but then they buy their stuff online and dodge their taxes. Which means all that’s left are vape emporiums and retail parks. It shouldn’t die, they shouldn’t knock these places down, it’s our history. My songs point the finger, but don’t wag it. It’s just going “‘Look! Isn’t this funny, everyone?” over a disco-punk beat.”
The group released a live EP in February 2023 (Live in a Village Hall) taken from a recording made in an empty village hall and including the Blur-esque track "Me and Your Mates"., whereas "Shooting" is with no doubt a catchy, self-derogatory, 80s pop-influenced indie single, that offers up a wry side-eye to consumerism.
Their presence on the current music-scene, states itself a natural instinct to drench an infectious production with such enjoyable lyrics: ‘the sweet smell of Lynx and regret, you can’t beat it ’. As their frontman hopes: “I want music to uplift me and make me feel cool and collected. I take my inspiration from the 80s in that way - the threat of nuclear war, the miners’ strike, privatization, crap government - what did Pop do? ‘Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go’, ‘Girls On Film’...almost LAUGHABLY dancing whilst hell opened up! Where is that now, when we need it most?”
