Um, Jennifer? deliver serrated and sarcastic soft-punk single "Went On T"
Trans-punk duo's Um, Jennifer?'s latest cut "Went On T" is a brash and wry offering, bringing alt-rock percussive beats to gender politics
"Went on T as you began to love me, and man did that fuck with the attachment in my head," New York City based indie-punk outfit Um, Jennifer? open their tenacious, grunge-skittered latest track "Went on T", immediately connecting the listener to their candid confessionals. With a sordid, humorous edge to their assured sound, the trans duo meld alt-rock drum beats with an overwhelmingly contemporary commentary on gender binaries and politics of visibility.
“‘Went On T’ is the indie rock anthem calling you back home to yourself," the band explain of the track. "It’s about taking your own body back from those that claim to love you. It’s a reminder not to take on anybody else’s shit.” With the state of LGBTQ+ rights, and indeed most pertinently those of trans individuals, under threat of being rolled back or reversed across the globe, the track's message of defiance and standing strong in the face of adversity is a moving one.
The accompanying music video, directed by the band's lead singer Elijah Scarpati, is similarly hard-edged filmed in a graffiti-laden skate park, but illustrates the joy of trans and gender-queer folk coming together to simply, and visibly, exist in an unapologetically social setting.
With "Went on T" coming just one year into Um, Jennifer? releasing music, it's an impressive laying down of the torch for things to come. Whilst Elijah may sing "no one knows me like I know my goddamn self" on the track, here's hoping that the duo's audience will only continue to expand in years to come.
