UCHE YARA's double feature "yesterday I was in London" and "homesick" shades in vibrant, raw colours
21-year-old Berlin-based artist unveils a double single along with an accompanying music video directed by Mala Kolumna, which combines both tracks in a well-rounded and honest ode to life on the road
Picture this: in 2023 a young artist, fresh out of high school, immediately dives into a whirlwind of over forty live shows with her four-piece band, even before her inaugural single release. Traversing diverse cultural backgrounds - maturing in Austria, and currently calling Berlin, Germany her home - venturing into new places with her music comes naturally to UCHE YARA. And with stops on tour including festivals like Wilderness, The Great Escape, and MELT, her talent clearly covered the air miles.
Now giving us a taste of what’s to come in 2024 UCHE shares her first two singles of the year, “yesterday I was in London” and “homesick”. This double A-side single comes off the back of the high praise she received for her vigorous debut, "www she hot", and further underscores her profound song writing, melting loneliness and disillusion along with a catchy beat and equally shiny guitar sound. The classic bedroom production captivates with youthful energy and thematic depth, the same carried-on stage by the songwriter.
A story in two acts, the double feature collates UCHE's experience as a 21-year-old artist facing life full throttle and at its most flashy, but not without its down moments. Explaining a little more about the two tracks she divulges, “At the end of the day, I’m just a girl, missing my friends and family. It’s about travelling and ‘living the life’, but, at the same time, suffering badly from homesickness and missing the closest people that I could actually experience all of this with the most.”
The decision to play live extensively before releasing any music was a conscious one. “Even though the music was ready the whole time, I felt like I still had to figure out the right approach to publish my art. Playing live first, direct contact with the audience and seeing how the songs would transfer live just felt the most appropriate for me,” UCHE explains.
How can such a fresh, young artist carry and exude such power, depth, and sensational energy, as she undeniably does on stage? From psychedelic rock, to pop, and R&B with driving guitar solos and remarkably wide-ranging vocals, UCHE YARA delivers it all – more than you knew was possible from one band, and certainly from one person.
