Theo Moss makes her long-awaited debut with dreamy confessional track “Autopilot”
Alt-rock lovers, beware. We might have just found your latest obsession.
While indie rocker Theo Moss’s debut is an impressive display of her prowess as a songwriter, it’s one that’s been a long time coming too. This is her first stint as a solo artist, sure, but Moss has engaged with a plethora of musical projects before this, and has been for a long time. While most artists discover their love for music young, Moss picked up the music bug especially early at the age 5.
Some kids of this age might grow up idolizing cartoon characters or chasing after shiny, plastic toys, but Moss chose to immerse herself in the world of classical music instead. She spent over 12 years studying violin, and through her studies discovered the worlds of indie pop, grunge, and alt-rock. She became especially drawn toward the sound of ‘90s alternative icons like Mazzy Star, PJ Harvey, and Nirvana, acts which eventually came to influence her own sound.
Eventually, Moss’s belief in herself as an independent artist became cemented after she left home to pursue her dreams at the age 17. It was then she became a partner for other artists and their projects, still hoping to learn and inspire her own sound. Now, she’s finally ready to make her debut. Enter Moss’s first single “Autopilot.” So, while this track is her first solo song, she has been paving this path for herself for well over a decade.
Produced by Gabe Wax (Soccer Mommy, quinnie), that same addictive quality of the songs made by other established indie artists is here too. It’s a confessional alt-rock anthem that tackles the hard reality of accepting that a person you love has changed. Even though you want to try to bring them back, there’s nothing you can do to help pull them out of it. "I wrote Autopilot about someone hurting the person you love and feeling angry and powerless. You know you can’t save them but you want them to feel safe again,” Moss said about the track. The result is a song that’s effortlessly dreamy and melancholic with confessional, honest lyrics and framed by driving guitar and drums.
“Autopilot” is the first single off of Theo Moss’s upcoming EP, which she says is a blend of classic alternative rock with plenty of modern influences, an ode to Moss’s evolution as a person and artist. After all these years of learning and growing, she’s finally ready to share what she’s learned about her own music and views of the world. The result is a real passion project that will details her journeys of self love and discovery, and addiction and pain alike. In short, it’s something that everyone can relate to, all tied up in a shimmery alt-rock bow.
