Sardonics and sharp humour abound on The Pill's latest "Scaffolding Man"
Hailing from the Isle of Wight, The Pill give us a noisy nudge on their second single, "Scaffolding Man", a quick, smart slice of DIY punk.
Though "Scaffolding Man" and April’s "Bale of Hay" are the only tunes they have out so far, The Pill have been honing their craft against the messy, high-energy soundboard of the live scene for the last year and a half, and it shows. "Scaffolding Man" is addictively balanced between scuzzy, jumpy guitars and sweet, soft moments that give you a second to sway before tumbling back into the chaos.
The Pill have been working together since 2019, and have racked up countless shows and festivals radiating out from their hometown on the south coast - and across just two singles, we’ve definitely heard the double-or-nothing fierceness come through. Comprised of Lily Hutchings on guitar and Lottie Massey on bass with vocals a dual effort, the duo inject fun at every turn, from sonics to subject matter. Just because it’s loud and fast-paced, doesn’t mean their output is as dark in content as one may presume.
"Bale of Hay" was a sub-2-minute shout about just how hard it is to be blonde, tongues firmly in cheeks made all the more hilarious by the earnest of the pair’s delivery. "Scaffolding Man" builds on the silly storylines by tracing the fairytale love story of being caught in the bath or dancing naked in your kitchen by the guy doing the scaffolding outside your house. Speaking about the song, the duo prompts, “Are you in love? Or are you just freaked out. How about both? ‘Scaffolding Man’ is a love song with attitude; a romance for the stage, but maybe not for your wedding day. Pick up the bubble bath and open the curtains, The Pill’s second single has arrived.”
Universal, ridiculous, and indulgent, The Pill wonder if they could be in love with the stranger for the track's duration before wrapping the dream up swiftly in a deluge of sparkly, stompy riffs. It’s fun to daydream and it’s fun to complain about stuff, especially with The Pill soundtracking it.
