Sam Ezeh dishes a soulful, experimental slice of pop on “AUDIOCORE”
The lively, pulsating soundscape in this Swedish producer’s latest single is a homage to the power of sound. How can something invisible awaken something so palpable within us? With its satisfying mix of psychedelic rock and new wave sound, it’s a song reminiscent of the discographies of contemporary indie icons like Blood Orange and Steve Lacey.
Over the last few years, Swedish musician and producer Sam Ezeh has been going out into the streets of Berlin to learn about something deeply important: how to be himself. It was in that city where he began to openly accept his queerness, and in turn, finally allow himself to flourish and fully shape his music too. While Ezeh’s previous works are still true to his sonic style, new projects like “AUDIOCORE” see him fall deeper into himself and become more honest, open, and playful with his lyrics. The result, he says, is life-changing. “It’s liberating to play with personas—real or imagined. I used to feel the pressure to keep everything ‘authentic,’ but now, I don’t care,” he said about the change.
With modern influences like Steve Lacey and Thundercat to musical icons like Prince, Ezeh’s sound is a mesh of contemporary alternative pop wrapped in a sultry, soulful bow. With sprinkles of surf-rock and new wave, it’s a lively, undulating sound. In his new single, “AUDIOCORE”, Ezeh’s breathy vocals float across a layered soundscape, echoing alongside ethereal synths, bass, and rhythmic drum beats.
The track is moving and lively, a homage to the transcending power of sound waves. “‘AUDIOCORE’ came from my fascination with the intangible,” Ezeh said about the track. “The physical vibration of a sound source becomes a digital signal, then pulses back as physical waves. These waves create this intimate feeling, as if someone’s right there with you—even when they’re miles away.” The single comes ahead of Ezeh’s upcoming EP LOVELACED, which is slated for release on November 27th. Coming out three years after his debut EP ‘Sapphire Alley,’ this single might be his most experimental project yet.
