There is little metaphor needed on Ruby Waters' visceral "Adult Swim"
Perfectly picked for a Valentine's Day release, Canadian up-and-comer Ruby Waters releases hot and heavy new romp, "Adult Swim"
"Come over for a swim inside me," Ruby Waters opens "Adult Swim"; an instruction parading as metaphor. Alongside the consistently thrumming production, it takes just seconds to lay ground to the direct and unapologetically sensual tone of her latest track. In many ways the culmination of the "fuck it, why not" attitude which underpins much of her texturally diverse and thematically boundary-pushing discography, the single serves as the perfect prelude to Waters' promised upcoming debut album.
“'Adult Swim' is about deep affection. Making love. Allowing yourself to get lost in the senses and feelings that evoke the horny devil inside," Waters explains. Whilst perhaps not with the canonically Canadian politeness international eyes would expect, the track's overt sexuality and openness to feeling is a refreshing embodiment of the sex positivity which radiates amongst current 20-something culture. With the track's accompanying music video also showcasing steamy make out sessions shared between all kinds of people - young, older, queer - "Adult Swim" stamps itself as a relative and representative romp for the zeitgeist.
Waters uses her music to storybook life's minutiae, sure, but she can't help it if her diary is just so much more interesting than most. Sex, drugs, rock and roll, all included. Already receiving a nomination for Best Alternative Artist at the 2022 JUNO Awards (especially impressive as an independent artist), her chronicles are clearly pulling in the pundits.
As we unashamedly give in to carnal desire as encouraged on "Adult Swim", it can't be helped if this causes an insatiable appetite for more music from Waters.
