Roomer’s latest track “Chance” is a shoegaze slow dance in an impossible storm

Chasing after love could take you a lifetime. To save yourself the hours, and the heartbreak, burgeoning dream-pop group Roomer suggest you leave things to chance instead in their aptly-named new single

Beginning with soft strums of an acoustic guitar, “Chance” has an angelic start with singer Ronja Schößler’s voice floating atop funky bass guitar chords and bold hits of a drum. As the instrumentals merge with her vocals, Schößler sings about her yearning for love, while admitting she knows it’s best to leave things to chance to avoid the pain. Spectral in its dark and dreamy allure, the single is an evolving web of uncommon chord structures atop intentional slacker rock rhythms. Ronja cries out into this dreary and ethereal noise as a fuzzy electric guitar brings the single to its searing end with a burst of grungy electric feedback.

"Chance" is also accompanied by a music video awash in symbolism, featuring veiled figures caught in different shadows and lights.
The band muse, “Leaving it all to chance, I think that's best. As if testing the weight of those words. Sensing their density mid-air. Fully aware that sometimes it is fate that must do the heavy lifting. A step forward without reaching, only tracing the outlines. Flame shards flicker, light and shadow held between fingers—a give and take, searching for something just out of reach. The simplest of desires. Someone to share some fries and take me home."

Comprised of four friends, including songwriter Ronja Schößler, composer Luka Aron, experimental producer Ludwig Wandlinger, and jazz guitarist Arne Braun, Roomer’s debut upcoming album Leaving It All to Chance is slated to come out this April via Squama Recordings. First coming together in 2020 in Berlin, the four-piece has a slew of tracks full of complex yet approachable sounds.

Each member is well-known in the European underground through their solo projects, but their discography as a band, including their 2022 EP Skice, is just as impressive. It’s a small collection of sultry and seductive lyrics, fuzzy found-sound recordings, rhythmic drum patterns, and shining synths. Reminiscent of underground artists like Florence Sinclair and NINA, Roomer will entice anyone who loves a band with a pension for distorted guitars and smart instrumentals, and has a compellingly mysterious disposition to match their hazy sound.
