Provoker's “Another Boy” is a masterclass in atmospheric world-building

On their Kenny Beats-produced new single, “Another Boy”, Provoker levels up their alluring, horror movie-coded aesthetic.

Sink into the blurred shimmer of the late-night city, its neon glow buzzing in your head, where heartbreak lingers in the shadows and the streets pulse without end. Provoker’s latest single, “Another Boy”, casts its ghostly presence across the dancefloor, where every note is a shadow slipping through the cracks of unspoken regret – a spectral transmission of longing wrapped in jagged post-punk and the brutalist synth textures of Jonathon Lopez.

Originally founded by Lopez a decade ago as a solo project for imagined horror film scores, Provoker has since evolved into a trio, with bassist Wil Palacios and frontman Christian Crow Petty shaping its world-building approach. Their ability to balance synth-driven experimentation with Petty’s R&B-inflected delivery has become a defining trait of their sound. Produced by Kenny Beats, the track expands on the band’s signature blend of coldwave, melancholy, and contemporary R&B, offering a sonic atmosphere both haunting and euphoric.

Alluring yet conflicting, the song sets its subtle atmosphere right away. A lead guitar riff, delicate and melodic, introduces the track, accompanied by a faint, dial-tone-like synth hum – a disorienting signal from some lost connection. Then the drums crash in, syncopated, locking with a bassline that feels both restless and hypnotic, making “Another Boy” distinctly groovy – a paradox where tension and movement collide.

Christian Crow Petty’s vocals are detached yet seething beneath the surface. Drenched in reverb, his delivery exudes a brutalist coolness, perfectly complementing the song’s stark, mechanical textures. The lyrics, written in a dusty Echo Park attic and veiled in ambiguity, hint at regret and dissonance: “This is something I won’t forget / Stuck on all those things you said.”

The production, meanwhile, thrives on space and restraint. Synthesisers shimmer in the background, never overwhelming, like distant lights flickering through a fogged windscreen. This atmospheric minimalism has defined the band’s sound since Dark Angel (2018), and it was further refined and solidified in their full-length debut, Body Jumper, which deepens their hypnotic, filmic approach.

“Another Boy” moves between confrontation and surrender, dancing through the wreckage of something lost. It lingers in the liminal space between longing and acceptance, where memories blur into fluorescent hum and fading melody. Haunting, immersive, and undeniably catchy, this is Provoker at their spectral, self-assured best.
