Orchid flirts with an ethereal world in “heaven/jealous”
After celebrating the label’s first birthday earlier in the month, UTOPIA today releases Orchid’s "heaven/jealous", a sparkling UK-garage track set in an otherly world.
Self-described as tongue-in-cheek and sensual, "heaven/jealous" is a sweet re-introduction to Orchid. Inspired by a poem by Persian Rumi, in a book about a mushroom wonderland where is mentioned that 'sometimes liquid love on earth makes the sky jealous’, "heaven/jealous" celebrates love in a material, physical world full of hedonistic pleasures.
“I heard this quote from Rumi and it took my breath away, about how having a physical body to love others with is better than any prize of an afterlife or immortality can give. I think our world and being alive is underrated,” Orchid explains. “I wanted to write something that celebrated the fleeting reality of love and being a mere mortal, and capture that euphoria and romance... imagining love in a glutinous, effervescent indulgent earth with all its material things, like this maximalist thirst trap made just for Heaven.”
It is the first single of the artist’s upcoming 5-track EP to be released this summer, set to push Orchid’s brand of pop into the future while pulling from a sensibility of nature, beauty, and poetry. “I want that physical, visceral, bodily experience to be present in my music - from the most abstract version of it through to the most pop. I want to find beauty in this real, actual life,” she continues.
Released via UTOPIA – created by BBC Radio 1 DJ Jaguar – the label and cross-platform community is the perfect home for her playful lyrics and yearning harmonies. As quoted by Jaguar: “It’s an honour to be working with Orchid. She’s our sparkling, pirouetting fairy queen. She’s a real visionary in every sense. ‘Heaven/jealous’ is a work of art. I can’t wait for people to discover her textured, dreamy, infectious world, and fall in love with her and the track. I’ve loved this song for a long time, and finally, we’re releasing it. This is UTOPIA’s first music video, and our biggest creative project, which is such an exciting step for us as a label and platform. 2024 belongs to Orchid, just watch!”
