Mychelle's "Sweet Nothings" embodies an elevated state
Forming her latest slice of soulful R&B "Sweet Nothings" whilst homebound to Hackney, multi-hyphenate Mychelle showcases her world-quieting talent
For most, the vacant liminality of commuting is often filled with forty something minutes of either brainrot, or total lack of brain function altogether. In a turn of serendipity, however, it was when Mychelle was cycling back to her home in Stoke Newington that inspiration for her latest single struck. Pedalling with its own quiet, but constant revolutions, "Sweet Nothings" is a stake in the ground of self-contentment. “This track is for anyone that is over the sweet nothings that come out of someone’s mouth," she explains. "They’re not going to work this time. Go away.”
Mychelle hasn't always been so poised. In fact, as a child, music was a hand tugging her out of the letches of shyness. Forming a girl group in her early years and then busking as a teenager, the streets of London became bootcamp; a training ground to hone her raw, uninhibited voice. It was at London Bridge where her now-label, FAMM, noticed her talent and went on to sign her.
Whilst music is clearly lifeblood for Mychelle, she also finds space for other hobbies outside of songwriting and performing. As well as recently starring as an extra on Netflix's The Six Triple Eight and BBC's Eastenders, she also is an avid sportswoman splitting her time between the running track, the basketball court, and the football pitch. It's the latter that sets the stage for the accompanying music visual for "Sweet Nothings", a showcasing of one of the purest forms of happiness: team sport with a group of female friends.
"Today I've decided to put my energy into things that make me happy," emblazons the screen before the track starts playing, and sure enough siphoned into the slinking R&B melodies of "Sweet Nothings" are lyrics renouncing Mychelle's previous run-ins with partners. "Ooooh, I don't want to make the same mistakes I did," she reflects, "Ooooh, all the sweet nothings you said were all pretend / Never again will I let you back in." Whilst a retrospective break-up track, it's one that doesn't speak from or dwell on the doldrums, instead showcasing Mychelle at an elevated, settled place of self-satisfaction.
