Madchester-inspired newcomers Marseille release empowering indie-rock track “History”

Working with Wolf Alice producer Michael Smith to make the single come to life, surprising new five-piece Marseille have crafted a nostalgic indie-rock anthem with their latest song, "History"

The burgeoning alt-rockers known as Marseille are a group made up of surprisingly young virtuosos. Not unlike peers in the indie scene when they first started (The Lemon Twigs, Black Midi), the average age of these band members is only 19. Despite being a part of Gen Z, this group takes much of their inspiration from the eras of the ‘60s, ‘70s, and beyond. Meshing the sound of niche genres from DIY to Madchester to Merseybeat (think Oasis meets The Stone Roses meets The Lords), the band has found their space as the exciting newcomers of the alt-rock scene.

While Marseille is constantly honing their sound as they hit their stride, the band has already embarked on a sold-out tour in the UK, and they’re only just getting started. In their latest single, “History”, singer Will Brown pictures a bright future where his name ends up written in history. With a powerful and hopeful undertone, the single points back to the sound fans loved from indie-rock legends of the ‘90s. Anthemic and empowering, “History” is a nod to the dreams we all had as kids.

“History is a simple song which applies to any young person with big aspirations. It’s probably the most personal to us as a collective as we fit that criterion,” Brown said. “We are five young lads that want our legacy to be remembered, and that is one of the most special things that anyone can ever write about.” With driving drums courtesy of Tom Spray, thumping bass from Will Sabey, and sickening guitar from Joe Labram and Lennon Hall, the prowess from this five-piece is clear from the first strum to fade.

While “History” is a distinct meshing of alt-rock and emo, many of their other singles feature notes of shoegaze and folk, with the band having no problem blurring lines. Clearly, Marseille has a confidence beyond their years, and a strong career is made to follow that type of energy.
