Marie Naffah sings the praises of female friendship on "Gloria"
London-based singer-songwriter Marie Naffah delivers delicate, captivating lyrical poetry wrapped in soaring folk-pop production on latest track "Gloria"
Countless songs are released on a daily basis, and its hard to cut through the noise with sweet, gentle productions. However, with her folk-pop composition enriched by crystalline vocals and a soothing build-up, Marie Naffah's "Gloria" is not one to ignore. Following her latest singles "Rust & Blue" and "Loving You (Tenderly)", the track ushers in her upcoming debut full length album, out this summer.
"Gloria" is a love song of colossal proportions, dedicated to the epic romance that comes with female friendships. Something poetic, cinematic, biblical, and sacred; the track manages to be at once larger than life but also delicate and fragile. "It's an ode to the enduring bond of female friendship," Naffah explains. "It's about how your best friend can be your rock when you're feeling low, lifting you up when you need it most."
She continues, "I wrote it with my own best friend in mind, and I truly believe it's one of the best love songs I've ever written. I hope it reminds listeners to take stock of their friendships, to hold people close, kiss their foreheads and express love often.” With the clarity and freshness in her vocals anchoring the listening experience, the dynamic undertones of its chorus resonate immediately with the audience.
Marie Naffah fuses classic lyricism (inspired by the likes of Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and Joni Mitchell) with modern production quirks akin to Sharon Van Etten, striking the perfect balance of cutting-edge and nostalgia. Naffah makes music to make you smile, and while she does touch on personal subjects, the journey is freeing for both her and listener alike.
Having recently gone through a number of milestone moments in her life, Naffah has now found herself creating her most authentic music to date. “I’ve never been more proud than of this new music I’ve created with my bandmate, producer and long-term collaborator, Robin Breeze. We challenged ourselves and spent a lot of time trying to make a sound that feels uniquely mine. I took my reference playlist to Robin, which was a clunky cocktail of Beatles, Billy Joel, Bleachers, Big Thief & Sharon Van Etten, and instead of pushing me into a genre, he said ‘yeah, we can do this’ - and we did.”
