Innovative indie-rockers late night drive home pour a mournful bliss on “Believe Me (Even If I'm Lying)”
The four-piece act based in El Paso share the lead single and video directed by guitarist Juan “Ockz” Vargas, a fresh-facing excerpt from their new EP.
While seemingly inspired and fascinated by the mid-2000s alt-rock era, over the last five years late night drive home have grown, not only their audience but especially their sonic depth. Formed in 2018 by Andre (vocals) and Juan (guitar), the band started as a two-person project with an initial interest in lo-fi garage-pop. As they started to achieve more praise, ‘Ockz’ recruited Baca, his cousin, who learned how to play the bass to join the band, and their long-time friend Brian Dolan on drums. The songwriting evolution is not over yet.
Today they announce their new EP i'll remember you for the same feeling you gave me as I slept via Epitaph Records. "Believe Me (Even If I’m Lying)" – the first video single- is “a collection of emotions digitally transferred into audio,” the band comments. “Take what you want, read in between the lines. We leave these lyrics up for your own interpretation; find your own meanings for listening to this song.” The VHS-inspired video is directed by guitarist Juan “Ockz” Vargas with co-direction from Jaydog and Edbar.
If in the very first pieces, the difference in style and writing was marked from song to song, now their musical influences have been saturated into mature but emotional writing. The kids have landed an intense indie rock with melodic guitars and synth-like leads. Since the days of "Stress relief" - a real breakout – they have naturally built a deep connection with their fans, genuinely showing off intimate themes. As they sing on the track, “My fragile mind is getting bad tonight / I'll get high and find the invite /and wonder why it never feels right.”
This time, the recording process was first curated by Sonni Diperri (The Drums, Animal Collective), then by Ross Ingram. Despite the urge to find a proper tag for their sound, late night drive home are quite able to deliver infectious tracks. With heartfelt lyrics and sonic mantras, this act brings a refreshing presence into the indie rock scene.
"Believe Me (Even If I'm Lying" is out now, with the new ep i'll remember you for the same feeling you gave me as i slept, out 16 February via Epitah. Find late night drive home on Instagram.
