Keyside shine in layered new wave ode to freedom and escape in “Runaway”
Dubbed by some fans as a modern-day version of English bands like The Smiths or The Police, or even American alternative groups such as Fitz and The Tantrums, the magnetic sound produced by rising rock four-piece Keyside makes them a band for indie music fanatics to watch. Whilst selling out shows in their music hub hometown of Liverpool, the rising band is keeping their momentum going with candid releases like this latest single “Runaway”
The Liverpool-based band known as Keyside cite modern indie groups such as Fontaines DC and Blossoms as influences, as well as more established groups such as The La’s, but still they’re pioneering a sound all of their own. Mixing sunny chorus guitars with raw lyrics, the four-piece, who is currently signed to influential UK label Modern Sky, strikes a unique balance in their songs that keeps listeners enticed to leave their headphones on. The latest release by the group “Runaway” comes ahead of Keyside’s second EP Modern Sky. The band calls this particular track an ode to the art of escape.
Drink in frontman Dan Parker’s voice like wine as the group’s exceptionally visual lyrics drip from his lips. Parker recounts feelings of a fast heartbeat, running away to the “fishing line to the man on the moon” to escape, and becoming something of a cigarette in an ashtray full of someone else’s regrets.
Jangly surf-rock guitars set the foundation for these sweet, syrupy pictures, while a bedroom pop soundscape rife with intricate chords rings out across each hazy chorus. With Ben Cassidy on lead guitar, Max Gibson on bass and backing vocals, and Oisin McAvoy on drums, “Runaway” a beautifully layered track that navigates the difficult theme of young people trying to escape their harsh realities.
“’Runaway’ is about how hard it can be for young people growing up in a difficult household. It’s about breaking free from pressures and the liberating effect of discovering life, what the world is really like and who you really are,” Parker said about the single.
Young or old, everyone needs to let go of reality from time to time to sink into another dream or distraction. Whether you’re partial to guilty pleasures or more innocent ones, the next time you’re eager to wind down, try running away with Keyside just to see how it feels.
