Jordan Adetunji turns a universal truth into a reflective flow on "Insecure (Love Yourself)"
Belfast-based Jordan Adetunji’s "Insecure (Love Yourself)" is a perfect day-starter with a message that is positive and time-tested: you have to love yourself before you can love someone else.
Jordan Adetunji started his career in the rap realm and his new music has the captivating feel of Kendrick Lamar fused with The Weeknd. Clearly comfortable in a variety of genres, his 2020 single "Wokeup!" has echoes of Bloc Party's Kele Okereke, and last year's "Wasting Time" is an attention grabber.
He isn't afraid to tackle emo and post-punk either, having recently supported KennyHoopla on tour, and being championed by Bring Me The Horizon's Oli Sykes, who was instrumental in Adetunji's signing to RCA.
“"Insecure" is a song I wrote about learning to love yourself first before loving anyone else. It talks on self-love and how once we love who we are and are comfortable, we can share that love with other people. A straight raw reflection from where I was at in my life, especially the situation I was in.”
The production of "Insecure" is subtly brilliant, starting with just acoustic guitar and vocals before adding piano and other instruments in the chorus. The track is ultra-smooth and heartfelt, the perfect showcase for Adetunji’s impressive voice.
The video for the song doesn’t try to get cute or gimmicky either, it lets Adetunji do what he does best: sell with complete conviction and authority, in a way that can't be taught. His musical instincts are impeccable, and his voice has the power to touch your soul. He’s learned to love himself and his musical abilities, and you can feel that in every note.
"Insecure (Love Yourself)" is out now via RCA. Find Jordan Adetunji on Instagram.
