Humane The Moon indulges in pessimism on the grungy "Tear It Down"

Delightfully angsty and reflective, indie rocker Humane The Moon's "Tear It Down" lands like a solemn but eager meditation on a relationship, ready to knock down the past but hesitant to build anew.

Surrounded by droning guitars to create a grungy sound, the East Londoner's raw vocals call into the void, never letting a partner forget the impact of their past. "I am the memories you try hard to forget," he says, but it's not just them that has to live with the regret and pain. It's a double-sided but haunting break, as Humane reveals with the visceral lines, "I am the tired lungs that smoke your cigarettes / And I am the twisted gut that has to live with your illness."

All of this reflection culminates in the song's chorus, where he compares the duo to a house of cards, ready to be knocked down at a moment's notice. Cause for celebration or disappointment, it's not clear — though the narrator of the song is clearly better without constantly following the other person, he might not ready to completely start over. "I am the aging tongue that has to live with what you've said," he murmurs. Their severance might not take place just yet.

"'Tear It Down' is sung from a pessimistic internal voice," Humane says. "Seems we all have that nauseating hum between the ears, you get used to blocking it out. So writing from that perspective was surprisingly cathartic. Puts some distance between it and you.” The record certainly strikes a dour note, but that's often as good as a strategy as any — to get rid of the worst possible scenario before moving onto something better.

"Tear It Down" follows "K9," his single from May this year featuring Jeshi, and will land a slot on his sophomore EP, Debris Joice, to be released on the 13th of September. His debut EP, Mythomania, was a gritty, electric shock of punk energy, and with upcoming music produced by Dan Carey (of Moon's close influences like Wet Leg, Fontaines D.C. and Black Midi), Debris Joice is sure to surprise.
