GIRLBAND! pay homage to their Nottingham roots in “Heartbreak Town”
In the lead up to the release of their debut EP due at the end of the month, GIRLBAND!’s new single “Heartbreak Town” radiates with nostalgia as they reflect on the past hopes and fears of their hometown.
Since unleashing their first single ‘Not Like The Rest’ at the beginning of this year, GIRLBAND! have dominated the playlists of rock and punk fans, and their latest release ‘Heartbreak Town’ is anticipated to be just as popular. So far 2024 has been the year of the (excuse the pun) girl band, with The Last Dinner Party, Picture Parlour, and NewDad being the most exciting upcoming female-led groups to merge into the mainstream. “Heartbreak Town” cements GIRLBAND! as a worthy addition to this list of artists, with its effortlessly punchy riffs and sentimental lyricism.
A last minute addition to the line-up of this year’s Glastonbury festival, the Nottingham-based band deliver music carried by infectious melodic lines and indie rock inflections. “Heartbreak Town” is certainly one for the Sam Fender fanatics, as the song brims with similar jangly guitar sounds and buoyant rhythms. Perhaps one of the most notable features of this track is lead singer Georgie’s vocal performance, with her grit-infused tone comparable to that of fellow profound female vocalists like Fiona Apple and Billy Nomates. “My heart’s still on those streets,” sings Georgie, delivering the song’s pivotal melodic hook whilst encapsulating a bittersweet sense of longing to return to the town that she grew up in.
Speaking about the song’s lyrical content, Georgie explains, “‘Heartbreak Town’ is written about a town called Mansfield where I grew up. The lyrics are very much about always being rooted in the town you grew up in and how your heart always belongs there, even though the town has lost many of the things that were there when I was young and so much sadness I saw there growing up, it will still always be my home town. And it’s very much inspired by family and friends and people of Mansfield that keep the fire alive there.”
This is only the beginning for GIRLBAND! as they return fresh faced and raring to go from their UK headline tour. As GIRLBAND! embark on the second-half of this year’s festival season, there’s no doubt that their following is forecasted to expand. Flying the flag for Mansfield, GIRLBAND! have certainly done their hometown proud with this latest instalment to their discography.
