Flavours flex their psychedelic prowess on debut track "Coloured Image"
Like a psychedelic stick of Brighton rock, Flavours are magnetising performers through-and-through; their debut track "Coloured Image" distils this energy into a remedial slice of shoegaze
Birthed in Brighton just over twelve months ago, the Flavours foursome have been busy amassing live experience gigging in sold-out shows across eclectic venues, and turning heads in their wake. Known and celebrated among the local scene for the vibrant energy of their songs, coupled with their relaxed live presence, the band's buzz is best felt under the stage-lights where their brand of psychedelic alt-rock truly comes to life.
Now distilling that magnetism into their debut track, "Coloured Image", Flavours' first offering is one that epitomises their undeniably tinged psychedelic sound. Uncompromising guitar riffs punch through layers of groovy bass-lines, and vocals swell and distort around the production like a crackling vinyl. The brainchild of Samuel Turner and George Weller (and completed by Ben Archibald and Joe Walker), the band was formed from a mutual love of colourful alt-rock artists like Tame Impala, as well as a respect for the iconic greats of the '60s and '70s. "We believe this song is the most honest representation of our sound," Flavours share of the track, "and Ben managed to capture all of our live energy in his mix."
Attesting to the song's origins they add, "'Coloured Image' was born from Sam and George jamming with an acoustic guitar and half a drum-kit... it was brought to life when we first played it with the rest of the band, and we immediately knew we had something special. It's about self-identity through hard times, and the clarity that self-reflection can give you." And for the very first outing of a band keen to make their mark on the scene, the track represents the importance of self-identity in more ways than one.
At once powerfully reverent of their alt-rock predecessors in capturing that quintessentially vintage sonic texture, but also propelling the genre forward with crisp instrumentation, trippy reverb, and a heaping of energy, Flavours melds the gritty edges of Brighton with the city's colourful warmth to create a remedial slice of shoegaze. Unlike any other psychedelic trip, though, it doesn't look like the boys are due to come down anytime soon.
