Eterna showcases dark-tinged shoegaze in dreamy new cut “Perfect Comms”
Post-punk artist Eterna is paving a path for himself as a solo artist to watch in the world of modern shoegaze. The rising star is climbing the ranks of the niche sonic universe fast thanks to his addictively nonchalant post-punk sound, which is perfectly conveyed in this latest new single “Perfect Comms”
Barcelona-born and South London-based sound designer Guillem Peeters, better known under his alias Eterna, frequently puts out songs steeped in a multitude of high-energy genres. The former live drummer for bar italia is a frequent collaborator with other musicians in the post-punk realm including NINA and AmalCrossing. This wide variety of sonic influences and partnerships makes for an especially well-informed discography ripe with addictively dreamy sounds.
Firstly there’s the whispering, rolling hills found in tracks like “Garland of Shame”, which are rife with expertly-plucked guitar strings. Next, there’s the beautiful organised chaos in piano-heavy tracks like “I remember your name”. And finally, there’s a surprisingly cutesy synth for listeners to find in songs like “Industry Night”. That’s just a taste of what there is to hear. In short, Eterna’s music is both cinematic and vivacious, with every song alive in its unique rhythms, use of heavy distortion, and varied instrumentation alike.
Today Eterna is debuting “Perfect Comms” which marks the first release under his new label, the L.A. based collective known as Section1. Distorted guitars set the tone for this beautifully layered dreamscape of a song, with the delightfully hazy sound serving as a backdrop for ricocheting snare hits and Eterna’s jaded lyrics. Within his words Eterna captures feelings of isolation and dissociation. There’s some irony in the title of the song “Perfect Comms” too as Eterna laments in the lyrics, “the way you can just, just gaze off / as I list the reasons to you.” It’s a song to smoke a cigarette to while on a walk in a winter night, the perfect scenery to match this kind of dark artistry.
Scratchy guitars bleed out of “Perfect Comms” as the song comes to a close, the lyrics fading and giving way to the instrumental, noisy guitars conveying the hidden agonies felt over these feelings of loneliness. This is music of the unconscious, creation led by an intrinsic voice, a melancholic track fans of dark lo-fi sounds everywhere can enjoy.
Aside from this debut release under his new label, Eterna promises to keep the projects coming in the months to come, including a performance at Pitchfork London in November. So keep your ear to the ground to hear more from this artist, and remember the name: Eterna.
