Alongside Merlyn Wood and joe unknown, Dumb Buoys Fishing Club raise anchor on "FORMULA"
London-based producers DanDlion and Havelock join forces on Dumb Buoys Fishing Club, a lighthouse for sonic misfits, conceptual degenerates, and those seeking a break from reality; latest single "FORMULA" is entirely unmoored.
Running, or rather swimming, in entirely their own lane, Dumb Buoys Fishing Club is the latest it-group we all wish we were a part of. The brainchild of London-based producers DanDlion and Havelock, the idea was conceived in the haze of lockdown as a new creative outlet entirely unanchored from the artists' personal lives and existing sounds. Venturing uncharted waters, the duo's music froths with notes of hip-hop, funk, and alt-rock - embodying the very antithesis of their latest single's title, "FORMULA".
Pulling influence from the storybooks of other concept-based artists, and the caricatures of sonic misfits like Outkast and Gorillaz, Dumb Buoys Fishing Club follows two degenerate fishermen, pushed out of mainstream and mainland society, turning to the rolling ocean to escape their own reality. With fish puns and welly-boots galore, the outlandish storytelling and mischievous sense of play in the music they have created has left the project definitively stamped with a vibrance, intrigue, and well... buoyancy.
However, hidden beneath the waves is more than just eccentricity - the Dumb Buoys boys are also using the artistic project to express their passions for sustainability and environmentalism. The duo are on a mission to shine a light on the depleted fishing communities in which their upcoming album was brought into wonderfully chaotic and compelling fruition.
Birthed in the midst of a harsh seaside winter in mid-lockdown plagued Hastings, latest single "FORMULA" follows their debut track "SKELETON TOWN" - a writhing slice of alt-rock and post-punk tinged pop, brimming with syncopated refrains "Oh no look who washed up / You swam but it wasn’t enough" and an overarching febrility.
With extra collaborators joining the cooking pot on "FORMULA" - BROCKHAMPTON's Merlyn, and Kent-based joe unknown - the track is a softer-touch number about feeling liberated by the salty sea air. "About to be free / The ocean and me / Alone in the breeze", the boys sing in lofty siren-song, before extending a pithier invitation to fellow misfits to join them alongside gritty up-tempo beats, "come and jump overboard with us."
A relatively new endeavour, Dumb Buoys Fishing Club are casting their hooks with every day that passes, including impressive first performances at Glastonbury and The Great Escape. Now it's just a matter of time before they reel us all in.
