Dominic Wright extends a comforting lustre on "Picking At The Bones"
Mottled with subtlety and sunbeams, Brighton-based Dominic Wright's indie-folk evokes an intense intimacy
Brighton has always been a hotpot of music making. Whether it's the vibrant colours of the quintessentially British seaside town, the youthful, liberal community that flocks to the Lanes, or the wisps of salt in the beachy air, there's a magic and a magnetism tied to the place. Its latest export, Dominic Wright, has already been making a splash on the scene bringing the Brighton spark to stages across the UK, and his first two singles "Let You Go" and "I'll Be Alright" were the perfect introduction to his light-touch, sun-dappled sound.
Now with news of his debut EP, Ghosts, set for release in September comes another taster. Latest single "Picking At The Bones" packages comfortingly honest feelings of existential angst with a measured and whistling production - a track which benefits from the fuzziness of the instrumentation to create a warmth and sense of security, even if at odds with its lyrical throes.
"It is about the feeling of losing your identity and sense of self during a relationship, wondering if you’ll ever be who you were before it, and ultimately coming to terms with the fact that you won’t be that person again," Wright explains of the track. Coming to an affective crescendo in its muffled and mumbled outro, he sings "It was real and then it wasn't / I miss feeling how it was cause / it was me and then it wasn't / it was real and now it's not" - a sentiment you can imagine repetitively scrawled in journals and Notes apps while grieving the loss of a relationship.
In pairing confessional lyrical entries with restrained production, lithe in texture and still jaunty in sound, Wright manages to evoke an intense intimacy in his music. Speaking on his artistic ambitions he continues, "Making people feel safe is a huge part of my music. It doesn’t matter if people take something away from my music that’s different to what I put into it. All that matters is that my playing evokes some kind of emotion for listeners.” With the guitar his own personal sanctuary after dealing with his parents' divorce as a teenager, being expelled from school, and relocating to Brighton, it's a through-line that runs straight through the centre of his craftsmanship.
Managing to imbibe your art with such resounding spirit without the need for grandeur or over-the-top gesturing is a skill, and Dominic Wright's music is a masterclass in subtlety.
