Bedridden’s "Philadelphia Got Me Through" feels like stepping into a mosh pit of angry gymnasts
Yes, it’s that intense.
Becoming known in the underground rock scene for their surprisingly clean grunge sound, Bedridden is back with latest single, “Philadelphia Get Me Through”. The track tackles a night out in the city and an attempt to barrel past the hands of heartbreak by leaping into the arms of the Philadelphia nightlife instead.
Here jangly guitars intermingle with driving drums and bass in a simmering pot of rage. It’s grimy and chaotic, but the noise doesn’t boil over. Instead, layered guitar chords ring out atop the soundscape, the instrumentals thrashing against one another in some acute, gymnastic form. Singer Jack Riley drones atop the angry, fuzzed out sound, a gradually shape-shifting yet meticulously crafted collection of directed anger and urgent rock.
“This is the most charged song I wrote for Moths,” bandleader Jack Riley said, referencing the band’s upcoming album Moths Strapped to Each Other's Backs. “I was hyper-aware that I was losing it at the time. I was chasing a relationship that only made me feel belittled. Bedridden took a day trip out to Philly to play a show with Worlds Worst and I thought that having a good night away from Brooklyn would cure me. It didn’t. Soon after, I dug up this angular, repetitive riff in a 5/4 time signature and found the melody quickly. The song crescendos into damn near a metal track. Nick wrote an incredible drum part. I had the perfect groundwork for a diss track.”
While Bedridden had their official start in college in New Orleans, they didn’t become a full-fledged outfit until bassist Sebastian Duzian and drummer Nicholas Pedroza joined the mix. With the recent addition of guitarist Wesley Wolffe, together the band comes from a string of varied influences including jazz, ‘90s alternative, and shoegaze. With their album set for release on April 11th and promising to examine the intricacies of adult life, the time to jump into the mosh is now.
