"loverboi" is bad tuner's sound of the summer
Brooklyn-based DIY artist bad tuner teases his new EP Back To My <3 with the throwback, electronica-tinged "loverboi".
With vibrant sunny pianos designed for lavish Ibiza poolside parties, a bassline that Berghain would be proud of, and an ecstatic hopscotch of emotive lyrics, "loverboi", the new single by bad tuner hits all the right notes.
In its mix of garage groove and reverb drizzled vocals, bad turner whips up a throwback number inspired by nineties dance-pop. Taken from his upcoming EP Back To My <3, Brooklyn native bad tuner finds himself treading new ground; inspired by Robin S & Crystal Waters, he teams up with vocalist Sebastian Adé in a blossoming summer smash. Whilst there are elements which starkly echo many songs in the canon, e.g. Example’s "Faith", it manages to maintain originality, a feat in a considerably bustling genre.
Setting out to find a song that could bring the energy midway through a live show, he worked with Adé to nail the themes they wanted to explore. “It captures the feeling of dancing with a stranger, lost in a moment of pure lust and excitement when meeting someone new,” bad tuner says of its narrative.
Adé harkened back to his past, reflecting on car rides with his mother; he felt the track resonated with a specific joyful time in music. “Our aim was to create something fun, cheeky, and that, most importantly, makes you move. bad tuner really has a way of making people feel comfortable to be their most authentic self and I think you can feel that from his music. It’s such a privilege to collaborate with him. He’s got an urgent scrappiness to his workflow that’s very earnest & inspiring. We have a lot of fun dreaming up different personas and stories together.”
It’s brightly buoyant throughout, drawing on the feelings of pure ecstasy which appear when unashamedly jiving, "loverboi" sums up what it is to experience release. Already receiving kudos from DJ titans Pete Tong & Danny Howard, bad tuner is flying high.
