Babymorocco's "Body Organic Disco Electronic" bursts at the seams
London-based Babymorocco welcomes you to his cabaret of testosterone on "Body Organic Disco Electronic", the final teaser of his upcoming debut album, Amour
Babymorocco is cocksure. Braggadocious. Garish. Whatever adjective you want to pick, it's sure to ping off of his bouldering frame and equally Herculean ego with a knowing smirk. Over the last two years the British/Moroccan artist has gained notoriety for his delectably contemporary sound, melding scuzzy 2010s trash-pop with French-electro and EDM motifs, smuggled into the mainstream by the all too easily digestible and self-fetishizing image of his imposing stature. With approvals from the gatekeepers of the en vogue in modern culture, including The Dare, Jockstrap, and Charli XCX, Babymorocco is ready to snatch the hyperpop mantle for a victory lap of his own.
Ahead of his debut album dropping on Friday, Amour, he is - as generous and indulgent as ever - gifting his fans one last teaser in the shape of "Body Organic Disco Electronic". Following previous singles "Bikinis and Trackies" and "Babestation", the track is a vibrational onslaught made to be pumped through warehouse speakers. Refusing to gasp for breath at any point, it embodies Babymorocco's gluttonous approach to music where more is always more, innuendos are exchanged for full-blown eroticism, and tongues are most certainly everywhere but in cheek.
In a multi-levelled piece of performance art, the album follows the fabled life of aspiring dancer Jean Paul from the perspective of, and in conversation with, the already heavily caricatured Babymorocco. “Amour is a fast-paced, 16-track journey into living and becoming Babymorocco," he explains. "It’s a story of transformation as I leave London and reunite in Paris with Jean Paul—the love of my life and a part of myself that I had lost. This course proves the adage: you can take the party boy out of London, but you can’t take the London out of the party boy.” Touching themes of distance-strained friendships and harmful relationships, Babymorocco finds time to look inward whilst in the midst of writhing bodies. Although the club beats are as filthy as the distended sexual overtones of the record, there's real grit to be found within the dirt of the music.
Male pop artists often falter on their ability to provide compelling visuals to sit alongside their music. Now, in the zeitgeist of social media and ogling, Babymorocco and his figure-hugging short shorts are the perfect answer. It's a cabaret of testosterone, but one that's intentional in its campy genderfuckery and indiscriminate ruling: everyone is to feel their sexiest whilst in the world of Babymorocco. Always teetering on the line of being an immaculate stunt, but one that you can't help but continue feeding into, he has innovated dance pop whilst making it look immensely uncomplicated. "Body Organic Disco Electronic" begs you quench your thirst at the Kool-Aid fountain of Babymorocco, and stop for another look at his arms.
"Body Organic Disco Electronic" is out now, ahead of his debut album Amour on Friday 6th December. Find Babymorocco on Instagram.
