Xiu Xiu / Blue on Blue / Woom – Plan B, London 06/06/2010
Upset The Rhythm shows are always great because they don’t just put on a decent headline act, they put on a whole lineup. First on in the trio of brilliant acts was Blue on Blue, a London based jangly pop three-piece. They woo’ed the audience with their energetic, enjoyable performance. Definitely a band to watch out for.
California’s WOOM is Eben Portnoy and Sara Magenheimer Sara. Sara sings atop Eben’s fuzzy, catchy guitar riffs; the couple’s set was sweet and playful. They danced across the stage and seemed to be thoroughly enjoying their first London show. They performed songs from their debut record, to be released later this month.
Headliners Xiu Xiu, are very interesting. Mastermind Jamie Stewart sings with so much passion and emotion about subjects of such utter misery, it looks (and sounds!) as if he’s having a mental breakdown. The duo smash at cymbals with all the energy in their bodies, and played a bizarre array of instruments- a Nintendo DS being one of them. Their live show is most certainly something to behold.
