White Lies debut new songs, Live in London
It may be hard to believe for fans of their debut album but, tonight at the recently reopened Subterania, White Lies know how to throw a party. Having raised the bar considerably from 2009’s gloomy To Lose My Life…, the West London band offered the - much dancier - 2016 album Friends, a sentiment which came out in full force tonight.
Blasting out opening track “Big TV”, the full capacity venue instantly irrupted into a sing along, which barely ceased for the entire show. The set was, in part, still a celebration of Friends, with tunes like “Morning in LA”, “Hold Back Your Love” and “Take It Out on Me” getting the crowd dancing with ardour, even despite the heat. The band were clearly humbled by this frenzied reception, as frontman Harry McVeigh thanked the crowd on several occasions.
Halfway through the set McVeigh revealed that the band have been finishing up the next album – news which was met with great cheers from enthusiastic fans - before performing a new song, titled “Believe It”, to keen response.
Although they’ve amplified their sound from Friends onwards, White Lies aren’t a band that shies away from their earlier, darker identity, with To Lose My Life… featuring heavily on the set list. “Death” sparked the liveliest reaction of the night, with the drop inducing a mosh pit that even the fans now in their late-20s couldn’t resist. “Farewell to the Fairground” was the most raucous sing-along, with the crowd belting out the repeated refrain of ‘Keep on running / There’s no place like home’ long after the band had finished the song (as well as while waiting for the encore and while leaving the venue).
The encore consisted of sparkly ballad “Don’t Want to Feel it All”, before the band closed a triumphant night with the huge “Bigger Than Us” – with every lung in the room at full capacity. Both band and audience were sweaty, gasping, thrilled, and entirely grateful for the magnificence of this comeback show.
