WALL – Notting Hill Arts Club, London 11/10/12
Last week saw the inaugural Black Cab Sessions gig at Notting Hill Arts Club. You’d have to be a fairly unobservant music fan to have missed the vast number of exclusively high-quality sessions these guys have recorded in the past, all with the brilliant quirk, (as the name suggests…) of being recorded live in a London icon – the Black Cab. However, in a thoroughly exciting development the people behind BCS decided to put their immaculate taste to even better use, spinning off a label from the sessions themselves; the first artist to take that honour being WALL.
Following a number of high-profile compliments from the likes of Steve Lamacq, NME and Flux Magazine, her performance stunned the small number of captivated audience members. The set was an entirely calm and professional experience, the highlights of which included the brilliant ‘Magazine’ and ‘No Secrets’. Haunting vocals are accompanied by simple, but perfectly complimenting, electronic rhythms throughout, in what was an extremely impressive first outing for the Black Cab Sessions. An eye or two must surely be kept on WALL.
