Stepping Out Into The Light: Bicep, Live in Manchester
Raving was born out of a necessity to escape; the need to leave behind the nine-to-five. In 2017, things haven’t changed that much. The world may have changed around us, but at the heart of it we still long for the same things – a dark room, shimmering lights, and great music. This is where you will find Bicep. This is where they call home.
This year has seen the Belfast duo reach heights they never thought possible. Upon its release, their debut self-titled album peaked at number 20 in the UK album chart. For a house/techno record to break its way that far into the mainstream is almost unheard-of. This record was not designed for the radio. There are no big pop star features, no pointless build-ups tagged alongside predictable drops – this is electronic music drenched in emotion. Tracks like “Glue” are the soundtrack to memories you are still waiting to create; a skilful blend of sorrow, nostalgia and euphoria - connecting instantly with your head, your heart, and your feet.
Bicep don’t play to the crowd, they play for the fans of dance music culture; and as dedicated fans themselves, they know exactly how to make them tick. Their deep love, knowledge, and understanding of electronic music is key to their success. Their years of curating their Feel My Bicep blog, whilst cutting their teeth with a string of singles and EPs has all led to this moment. They have bided their time, lurking in the corners of darkened dancefloors; learning, evolving, maturing - and most importantly, waiting for their perfect moment to step out of the dark.
As 2:30am looms ever closer, the crowds of people pile into the dark, cold, clammy arches of Manchester’s underground venue. Sweating, wide-eyed bodies jostle for room as they face the stage; waiting to catch a glimpse of any slight movement that might signal the onslaught of the only reason they have been working for all week. The lights come on, the lasers flicker, and the swirling synths begin to take hold. I’m ready to let go. The only problem is, there is barely room enough left for me to dance.
