She Keeps Bees – Luminaire, London, 02/07/09
She Keeps Bees brought the buzz (sorry) up to North London to entertain an excited crowd at the Luminaire. The duo consists of New Yorkers Jessica Larrabee on guitar, and drumming wizard Andy LaPlant holding the rhythm. The pair have been in Britain the past month, holding a weekly residency at Hackney’s Britannia pub, with the Luminaire being their final show before a month in Europe.
They have a new record out this year on Names, titled Nests. They sound more than impressive on record but they really come into their element in a live setting. The crashing drums and dirty, bluesy guitar combine together and complement each other in the most marvelous way. Despite feeling poorly, Jessica’s strong vocal power shone through and undeniably had the ‘wow’ effect on the audience. They closed with single ‘Gimmie’ and, despite being the openers, left the crowd clapping and cheering for an encore. Brilliant.
