Noname captivates an adoring crowd, Live in London
Fresh from performing at Reading and Leeds Festival, Noname (AKA Fatimah Warner) graced Camden’s Koko with her breezy lyricism, soulful melodies and explorative rhymes – much to the delight of her dedicated fans.
In contrast to the mellow, woozy sounds and thoughtful vocals of self released debut mixtape Telefone, the impression you get of Noname as a live act is that she's someone you’d really like to party with, all ad libs, racing raps and reverberating beats. Despite only claiming a small feature, Noname effortlessly made Mick Jenkins’ 2014 collaboration “Comfortable” her own - the crowd hung on her every word, only allowing themselves to laugh when given the go-ahead by their headline act's chuckles.
Clearly influenced by Nina Simone and Missy Elliot – and with the band illuminated by bright, simple, lighting - Noname danced playfully around the stage, turning to the crowd as her instinctive flows were met with wild adoration. Alternating between spirited rhymes and classics like “Diddy Bop”, the organic nature of what felt like a playful jam session kept even the most avid audience members guessing. Poetic, powerful and honest, Noname proved beyond doubt that she's shaping the face of the scene.
