I’ve not seen Modey Lemon for a long while. Last time I time I “saw” them was when they supported, the now defunct, Mclusky and it involved vodka to the point where I don’t particularly remember them, except they were loud. One thing you’re guaranteed with these guys is volume!
Support came in the shape of Leeds prog metal outfit These Monsters. Sounding not too dissimilar to Leeds veteran post metallers Humanfly they entertain with their broken melodies and intense crescendos, even if they do, like Humanfly, stretch it out a bit too much. However good they are though, Isis will always do it better.
Second band Pulled Apart by Horses were suitably energetic but amounted to little more than that. Their hardcore tinged screwed indie pop got a bit boring after the first song, plus their lead singer was a bit of a tool.
On come the Modey. Now the sound in the Library has been good, and loud. The only problem when Modey Lemon started playing was the vocals were non existent. Lead singer Phil Boyd and his co conspirators put every ounce in so even with the vocal sound problems it still rocks. Jason Kirker also takes time out to salute the guy in the Hawkwind T-Shirt.
Driving through most of the material from their latest offering Seasons of Sweets, the band seek to deafen us – in a good way. Apart from a couple of idiot leftover fans from the Pulled Apart by Horses fan club pogo-ing in front of us like they’re watching the pistols, but they’re in fact from Castleford, the show quakes with decibel loveliness. Eventually the sound problems work themselves out and the band are at full power as the hit us with ‘The Bear Came Down The Mtn’ and ‘It Made You Dumb’. But it is the mantra like Sacred Place that has the audience silenced with its stoned out drones. I was hoping they’d play Crows at the end, and by god they did; an awesome song from their second record Thunder & Lightning. With that they exit stage left. Live, Modey Lemon do nothing but make it shake! Brilliant!
