FIDLAR make their mark in Heaven at one-off London show
Sweat-stained and in states of shock, the crowd at London's Heaven staggered up the stairway and out the doors.
Energy drained amidst a haze of elation and intoxication, those gathered tonight (23rd June) might’ve been battered, may have been bruised, maybe even left bloodied, but none of it without a sense of sheer satisfaction. FIDLAR are back, and in a dark, cramped room they’d just shown 1000+ people exactly what it was they’d been missing.
FIDLAR’s angst-driven anthems have long placed the band on a pedestal in the eyes of their audience. Liberatingly rambunctious and thrillingly fierce, the LA four-piece blast through dejection with enough bravado and exhilaration to make anyone believe the world is theirs for the taking. On stage, they do the same for every person in the room.
From the instant the four shadowy figures that make up the group stepped under the stage lights, the venue was in uproar. Kicking off from the start with “Stoked And Broke”, the four-piece demonstrated why they’re such a force to be reckoned with. “If I fucked up today, hey, nothing’s wrong!” the room screamed stagewards, letting loose without a care but for the band performing in front of them. The night was only set to intensify.
Rewind an hour and Spring King were centre stage. Their tight performance and enthusiastic energy ignited like wildfire, invigorating the audience in a way few acts manage to pull off in front of a crowd vastly unfamiliar with them. The clear heroes of the night were FIDLAR. Inciting the venue to “get weird”, the LA four-piece kickstarted one of the most wildly eccentric shows you're likely to witness.
Powering through favourites “Max Can’t Surf”, “No Waves”, “Cheep Beer”, and “Awkward”, the energy never once even stared to cease. Like fabled lemmings reaching a cliff face, a seemingly endless stream of people clambered onto the stage to dive back off to whence they came, pausing only to take #selfies (and be threatened for taking #selfies - we just want to witness the music, guys, give it a rest, please).
Fierce anthems to picking yourself up and partying on resounded around the arched venue as fans picked each other up and powered through the haze of sweat and sheer devotion. Screaming along as they squeezed ever closer to the dimly lit stage at what is FIDLAR's sole UK headline show (to current knowledge), there was nowhere else these fans would rather have been.
Previewing new tracks from their forthcoming second album Too, the group remain at the top of their game. As dynamic and driving as ever, combining catchy chorus hooks and forceful lyrics, this showcase does nothing to tide over excitement currently surrounding the band. Entirely addictive in nature, the four-piece kept the room in a constant state of ecstatic enjoyment whilst raring for more.
It's evident that FIDLAR have the golden touch. A venue full of people meowing along to a cover of Weezer’s “Undone (The Sweater Song)” isn't something you witness often. Fans sinking to the floor until a song kicks in upon command rarely happens without complaint. If tonight demonstrated anything, it's how much power FIDLAR have in the palms of their hands. If they use it wisely, world domination might not be that far out of reach after all.
