Crushed Beaks – The Seabright Arms, London 09/02/15
London trio Crushed Beaks launch for their excellent debut album Scatter feels like a party, with extended family members and old friends making up a large section of the sold out crowd.
The Libertines play from the PA during the band’s sound check, and this kind of pub basement, fists-to-the-ceiling atmosphere is reminiscent of Doherty and co.’s raucous early shows where everything feels like its running on impulse.
Playing through the new album almost entirely, Matthew Poile thanked the audience for their patience up to its release: “Thanks for waiting so patiently for the album. It’s at the back there if you want to buy it”, before going all Bob Geldof and demanding “give us your money, and we will give you our love”.
It’s never less than blissfully entertaining, and you get the feeling that tonight is a much of a cause for relief as it is for celebration for the guys, who have finally got a singular body of work they can build on and use as a platform for an excellent 2015.
