Chairlift make London return with new songs in tow
After a three year absence from British shores, Chairlift made a long-awaited return to London last night (Oslo, 1st December) with a triumphant preview of their upcoming third album Moth.
Those expecting a rerun of the charming indie-pop bounce of "Bruises" may have been confounded by the eclectic mix of sultry 80's jazz grooves, moody electronica and R&B-influenced bangers that the Brooklyn four-piece unleashed during their 45 minute set, but Chairlift's willingness to experiment and evolve musically may explain why they've endured whilst so many of their iPod-commerical-soundtracking peers have dwindled into obscurity.
Caroline Polachek's powerful vocals remain a highpoint, and her mesmerisingly theatrical performance takes more than a few cues from her underated side-project Ramona Lisa - not least on new single "Romeo", whose scuzzy guitars and retro synths aren't a million miles away from latter-day St Vincent.
- Moth will be released worldwide in January 2016.
