Spit and polish: Bleached live in London
Under Moth Club's gold glitter-encrusted ceiling, last night (18 May) LA punks Bleached played a gig that literally fizzed with ramshackle energy.
Led by the pink and blue haired Clavin sisters Jess and vocalist Jenn, the set was heavy on tracks from new album Welcome the Worms which saw the band apply a toughened varnish to their sun-drenched sound, stepping away from the surfy Vivian Girls breeze of their debut Ride My Heart.
There were stupidly addictive choruses – the Weezer meets Joan Jett “Wednesday Night Melody” and the Brody Dalle-inspired crunch of “Keep On Keepin On” - while fans jumped on stage party to highlight "Sour Candy" which sounds exactly how you’d imagine if you were to drop The Undertones on Venice Beach: the kind of timeless punk that years down the line will still burn with vivacity of youth.
The Clavin's were two parts of much loved, snot-nosed teenage punks Mika Miko in the late noughties, and that ragged spirit lives on. Bleached are of course a far slicker proposition, but they’re not perfect and there were a few stumbled guitar solos and vocal queues as Jenn cast aside her guitar during “Sleepwalking” to writhe with abandon on the floor.
Live, Bleached feel raw and real, equal parts spit and polish, and the evening culminated in the band crowd-surfing across a doting crowd, sparkling beautifully under Hackney’s golden ceiling.
