Bipolar Sunshine – Birthdays, London 08/08/13
-
Former Kid British vocalist Adio Marchant performed the debut EP by his new project Bipolar Sunshine at Dalston’s Birthdays this week.
The East London Basement was filled to the brim, and after a particularly fun set from support Benin City, the crowd were in a party mood, keen to hear the latest offerings from this up and coming Mancuvian.
Opening with dreamy synths and some nice mellow breakbeats, there was a pleasant summery feel in the room. Marchant’s emotive voice got stronger as the set went on, but his talents as a producer were immediately apparent; What really came across was the radio-friendliness of some very well crafted pop songs, particularly his second track ‘Rivers’ which immediately had the crowd singing along.
Despite previously expressing a desire to move away from a typical Mancuvian sound, and the initial polished pop feel to the songs, there was definitely something reminiscent of the Artic Monkeys in the hooky guitar riffs; there was also a nod to the London Electronic scene, especially with the track ‘Fresh Start’ which had some clear SBTRKT/Sampha influences.
A short but sweet set at only six songs long – it will be interesting to see how his live show develops as he gets more time in the studio under his belt too.
