WhoMadeWho are a trio hailing from Denmark signed to the German label Gomma Records. They were formed in 2003 by bassist Tomas Hoffding, guitarist Jeppe Kjellberg and drummer Tomas Barford and released their self-titled debut in 2005 after a remixing a few tracks for other artists, with Hot Chip recently returning the favour. Indeed they have toured with electro contemporaries such as Hot Chip and Daft Punk, whilst also catching the attention of Josh Homme from Queens of the Stone Age who covered a track from their debut with his side-project The 5:15ers. Everyone knows that illegal downloading is widespread, inevitable and generally impossible to stop, but Gomma Records have still taken it upon themselves to tarnish this review copy with a rather annoying French woman barking at me at regular intervals with warnings like 'Do not copy baby, do not share'. It's flipping distracting and even the High School Musical series doesn't get on my nerves as much. Ok that's pushing it. But from what I can actually make out, The Plot is...well...it's alright. With thirteen tracks designed for your listening pleasure, there is a fair amount of filler especially in the dreadful 'Mowtown Bizarre' and drab meandering 'Raveo'. Even opener 'TV Friend' is like Lenny Henry stepping in for Lennox Lewis, it just doesn't pack the punch it should and goes by in underwhelming fashion. 'This Train' is amongst the high points of the album and is another one sure to catch the attention of Josh Homme, as rolling dirty fuzz guitars delight alongside the innocence of the piano refrain. Elsewhere 'Ode to Joy' and 'Keep Me in My Plane' smell favourably of Royksopp, 'Cyborg' draws inspiration from Beck and 'Working After Midnight' is a chilled out closer if a little downbeat.WhoMadeWho have certainly got the funk but there just aren't enough killer hooks and tunes to elevate them to the standard of LCD Soundsystem et al. It's just plain average stuff and is unlikely to make much of an impact in the UK market.
