"Sauna EP"
The assumption of aliases to provide an outlet for innovative wisdom within, is one that in some instances rarely bats an eyelid. However, when a piece is celebrated in the arts, the inadvertent enigma (hyperbole) that surrounds this intriguing quantity leads to us yearning for a label as a measure to diffuse an air of anonymity.
The Sauna EP by Vondelpark is a remote and apt therapeutic endeavour which momentarily transports the listener from the impromptu Ice Age of Blighty to balmy beaches a la Bondi. Released on R&S Records, the recent signings to the Belgian label showcase their obscure, yet nonchalant resonance on this capable four track compilation.
Lead track ‘California Analog Dream’ initiates a morose and isolated theme over this collection, interweaving the lo-fi and digital aesthetic via a contagious drum blueprint and delicate bass riff. The indistinct vocal induces faint memories of an unaccompanied summer where one came of age. Whilst, ‘Hippodrome’ is beset by a thumping two-step pattern; powerful guitars; and sedated, echoic drones reminiscent of post-Guero Beck.
The remainder of the EP encapsulates a fresh homage to The Cure through ‘Jetlag Blue Version’, a slight upbeat affair veering away from the glum blueprint. Easy on the ear basslines, embryonic humming and a hint of dormant despair being resurrected. In contrast, on ‘Backflip (In The Sauna)’ the soulful refrain of “We’ll talk about it” kick-starts a syncopated hip-hop backbeat that temporarily visits the Glitch and Broken beat, it abruptly ceases before it’s commenced.
Vondelpark were recently described by a fellow journalist as “introverted and slightly awkward” who saw the band live recently, a probable apt description with regard to the muted press about them. On the other hand, the aforementioned ambiguity surrounding this collective ensures their affection for music is preserved, mindful of what fame may bring. Forthcoming discography promises less pessimism and ample opportunity to juxtapose melodies with greater vigour for halcyon weather
