Clearly we have a confused group of young men here, the multiplicity of their name not being reflected by the singular cocksure arrogance of this albums title.

Do they live up to their bold claim of Champs? The answer is a resounding not really. There is some skilled musicianship on show here and most of the songs are well crafted, but there are far too frequent nods to their obvious influences. And when I tell you that The Loungs spin a familiar psychedelic pop sound, you know who those influences are likely to be. The Super Furries and The Beta Band are never far from mind when WATC is playing and for a bit of variety there are hints of Grandaddy afoot.

That said I did enjoy listening to this. There is some sublime silliness in the likes of Armageddon Outta Here and Googly Moogly. The songs over flow with ideas, often incorporating, brass, keyboards and radiators along with the usual guitars, drums and bass.

There is plenty of hooks to draw you in and the music has that refreshing summer feeling that has brightened what has been a miserable May. Expect to see these fellas at a festival near you this summer. Most likely playing that mid afternoon slot where you shake off the night before and get ready to do it all again….they might just get you in the mood.

Certainly not Champ but not Chump either.
